Clinical Nutrition and Functional Diagnostics as the Future of Preventative Health Care

The focus of the chiropractor is adjustment of misaligned vertebra.  These misaligned vertebra puts pressure on nerve and thus interfere with nerve flow.  The malpositioned vertebra is also called a vertebral subluxation complex (VSC) which affect a multitude of body processes in the body.  Pressure on these nerves can have many effects not all of which have symptoms you may feel.

The founder of chiropractic, D. D. Palmer, believed in three key areas as the cause of subluxations:  trauma, toxins and psyche.  This observation takes into account that the cause may be inside the body or outside the body.

More well know is that subluxations result in aberrant motion range resulting in pain, loss of full range of motion and decreased flexibility (stiffness).  Less well known is that is can also result or be caused by organ dysfunction.  To simply treat the pain symptoms of the VSC disregards the underlying physiological processes involved in nerve function.  Without proper nerve conduction the life force is impeded.

Pain can indicates a breakdown of tissues caused by digestive problems such as: maldigestion, malabsorption, nutrient deficit or an acquired or inborn error of metabolism.  Proper nerve flow to and from the organ is fundamental to good health.  Chiropractic theory refers to this as the Viscero-somatic reflexx which can cause the VSC.  The malpositioned joint thus effects nerve flow to and from the organs, brain and entire body.  An example is the patient with PMS more often than not complains of back ache.

In other words, a mechanical aberration due to posture, injury or activity is what is typically treated by the chiropractor.  Additionally structural faults may be associated with a disturbance of underlying physiology known as the viscero-somatic reflex.

Chiropractors are trained and board certified in laboratory diagnosis.  Additionally some chiropractors have advanced training in functional diagnostics which is a scientific assessment of visceral functioning.  It seeks to detect abnormal physiological function in the body prior to the manifestation of disease.  In conventional laboratory assessment samples are taken to look for the markers that indicate the presence or absence of disease.  The purpose is to confirm the presence or absence of disease.  Functional diagnostics on the other hand evaluates markers that indicate imbalances, altered relationships and nutrient deficiencies.  This type of laboratory assessment can detect an abnormal physiological function before there is a health crisis.

Thus minor imbalances are detected by examining biochemical changes which could contribute to sub-optimal health and lead to chronic degenerative disease.  These diagnostic tests are non-invasive or minimally invasive.  The test findings allow for the formulation of an individualized protocol.  Samples used are blood, hair, stool and urine.  Areas typically tested include: digestion, nutrient status, detoxification, oxidative stress, immunity and cardiovascular

An example is inflammation.  A normal inflammatory cascade may be altered due to toxicity or dysbiosis.  Toxins released in the body from numerous chemical reactions can build up and lead to auto intoxication leading to inflammation.   The body responds by way of the immune system.  Immune complexes build up in the joints and tissues creating pain and inflammation.  Or toxins outside the body enter the body (exogenous toxins) such as xenobiotics (paint fumes, farming chemicals etc.) which affect the liver and create free radicals.  The viscero-somatic reflexes respond.  For instance dysbiosis affects the digestive flora.  Normally that flora produces B vitamins among other beneficial processes.  A loss or change in gut flora affects the way the gut functions. Increased intestinal permeability allow toxins to be released causing dysfunction and pain.

For example from D. D. Palmer’s theory of the cause of subluxation complex consider that the psychic cause of the VSC includes mental, emotional, psychological and neurological. The effects of stress and resulting hormone imbalances are numerous: cortisol is depleted, DETA and melatonis are also depleted by stress.  The patient frequently presents with mid back pain and fibromyalgia symptoms.  Additionally she indicates anxiety, depression, nervousness and psychological manifestations.  She may be on HRT.  An amino acid assay indicates an imbalance which affects the production of neurotransmitters.  Laboratory tests pinpoint the imbalance.

Functional diagnosis allows for early therapeutic interventions with a much improved prognosis for what may appear to be minor symptoms.  It intercedes with early intervention what could set the stage for a much more serious problem later.  Functional testing includes laboratory panels which reveal underlying causes of irritable bowel, faulty digestion, allergies, indigestion, bloating, malabsorption.  All factors contributing to fibromyalgia or a reoccurring subluxation  (based on the viscero-somatic reflex theory).  GI function is measured for digestion, absorption, bacterial balance, metabolism and immune status.  Permeability testing  measures for an increase or a decrease which are both associated with numerous clinical disorders.  Detoxification profiles from urine samples assesses the capacity and susceptibility to oxidative damage.

Functional diagnostics answers consumer demands for preventative health care.  It is the medicine of the 21st century.  To position themselves as holistic physicians chiropractors must embrace the concepts of functional diagnosis and acknowledge the scientific validation of nutrition by practicing clinical nutrition, not assessment based on subjective findings.

A fascinating discussion will be worth comment. I think that you should compose more on this kind of topic, may possibly not be a taboo subject but usually people are not enough to speak about such topics. To the next. Many thanks
